GST Overdraft vs Cash Credit: Which Revolving Line Fits
Both revolve. GST OD leans on returns and the current account. CC leans on stock and debtors. Mixing the stories delays the file.

Both revolve — the engine of the limit is different
GST overdraft and cash credit are both revolving facilities. You draw, you pay down, the limit comes back. The difference is what the lender reads as the engine of that limit — GST and the current account, or stock and debtors.
How a GST overdraft file is read
GST OD looks at GSTR-1 / GSTR-3B, the current account, and whether sales you claim actually land in banking. Credit will ask why GST sales and credits do not talk to each other. A two-year GSTIN with six months of banking in a new current account is not a two-year file.
How cash credit is sized
Cash credit looks at stock, debtors and the operating cycle. A godown full of slow inventory does not automatically justify a larger CC. A clean debtor book with matching GST is a stronger story. Drawing power is a living number — not a one-time sanction poster.
Pick by the next 90 days, not by the product name
- Diwali or season stock spike that will turn into sales — say cash credit or a short WC line.
- Monthly GST sales that already hit the current account — GST OD is the cleaner conversation.
- A machine, vehicle or shed — that is a term loan, not a revolving line.
- One vague “working capital” note is how files bounce between products.
VFC Rise maps the facility. Sanction, rate and limit stay with the partner bank or NBFC. This page is not a quote.
GST based overdraft — what the returns must prove
GST overdraft loan files fail when GSTR-1 is strong and credits never land, or when the GSTIN is new but you want a two-year limit. Difference between OD and CC is the engine: tax-and-account versus stock-and-debtor. Working capital OD vs CC is that test, not a branding preference.
Cash credit for MSME — drawing power is alive
A godown of slow inventory does not automatically raise CC. Eligible debtors should match GST where the product expects it. MSME revolving credit that is drawn for a CNC quotation is a product error. Which is better GST OD or cash credit is answered by the next 90 days of the unit — stock spike versus billed sales already in the account.
How VFC Rise maps the revolving line
- Write the object: Diwali stock, monthly GST cycle, or plant.
- Share official bank PDFs and GSTR — not screenshots.
- Disclose existing CC/OD/term so limits are not double-counted in your head.
- Sanction and drawing power stay with the partner bank or NBFC.
Key takeaways
- GST OD leans on returns and the operating account; CC leans on stock and debtors.
- Both revolve. A term loan does not.
- Pick by the next 90 days, not by the product nickname.
- This desk maps. It does not quote a GST OD limit as a sanction.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between GST overdraft and cash credit?
- Both revolve. GST overdraft is typically sized off GST returns and the current account that receives sales. Cash credit is typically sized off paid stock and eligible debtors (drawing power). Mixing the stories delays the file.
- Which is better — GST OD or cash credit?
- Neither is universally better. Monthly GST already in banking → GST OD is often the cleaner talk. Season stock that will sit in a godown → CC. A machine is neither — that is a term loan.
- Can I take GST OD and CC together?
- Some units have more than one working-capital facility, subject to lender policy and how limits interact. Do not hide one from the other. The desk maps; the lender decides.
- Is GST overdraft a government scheme?
- No. It is a lender product that reads GST. It is not a ministry subsidy and not CGTMSE by another name.
